Acts 17: 11
Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they
received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily,
to see whether these things were so.
NASB
In the name of the One of Whom the Scriptures prophesy, amen.
OK, it is true. There are some who are more noble than others. There
are those who receive the word in a matter of fact way or reject it.
There are others who are much more excited about it, yet skeptical. Now
the Bereans who were more noble minded, were not doubters like Thomas and
the other disciples. They went back to the one source we have for truth,
the Holy Scriptures. The difference is that they were checking out the
teacher, they were "testing the spirit."
Christians are not supposed to blindly accept what their teachers say.
They are to always check it against the Scriptures. This is an important
responsibility that serves two purposes. First, it guards our faith, so
that we are not lead astray. Second, it helps the teacher remain
faithful to the Scriptures.
No doubt we are all quite lax in this area. How many of us really double
check what we are taught? It is good to be reminded of how important it
is to always examine the Scriptures to "see if these things are so." The
reminder, then, is one of the things God uses to keep us in our faith.
He points us again and again to the Scriptures, because they strengthen
our faith. May the reminder lead you back into His Word. Amen.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for reminding us how important it is to always
compare what we are taught with the Scriptures. Give us Your Holy Spirit
through Your Word, so that we remain in the true faith unto life
everlasting, amen.
