Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. NKJV In the name of our great Guardian and Protector, dear friends:

In the first article of the Apostles Creed the Holy Church confesses, "I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth." In part of Luther's explanation to that article he says, "He (God the Father) defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil." Part of confessing God the Father as the Maker and preserver of heaven and earth is to confess that He protects us and keeps us from all evil and danger. Yet, in this life we know that there are many instances of harm and danger that even come upon Christian people. Bad things happen in this life to Christians, as well as non-Christians. Sometimes this is hard to understand. But we must not forget that in this life Christians are also sinners who live in a world that has been cursed by sin. When such evil things happen, we also must remember that it is as a result of sin and the work of Satan. When God promises to protect Christians he is promising that even when bad things happen in this life some kind of good will come of it. What this good could be is sometimes not readily apparent. Maybe it will be nothing more than the fact that through suffering and trial we are drawn closer to our God as our faith is strengthened and we trust in Him more and more. This is surely a blessed thing. And we know that if evil befalls a person who has faith in Jesus, even to the point of death, that death will bring the ultimate good; eternal life in heaven. May God grant us all a blessed end. Amen.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we know that all things work together for good to those who love you. We thank you for protecting us both in body and soul throughout our lives. Whenever we do have to go through suffering and trials, draw us ever closer to you by means of your blessed Word and Sacraments. We ask this in Jesus name. Amen.
