Wednesday After the Tenth Sunday After Trinity, 8/22/01

1Thessalonians 1:9, 10 For they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead--Jesus, Who rescues us from the coming wrath. --NIV In the name of the One Who rescues us from the coming wrath, amen.

There is a feeling that comes over you when you come close to death. For some it is a feeling of terror. For others it is a feeling of despair, knowing that noting can be done to prevent death. I've been close to death at least three times in my life. Once was while swimming, the second time was on a motorcycle, the third time was in a sports car. The feeling was different each time, but each time it was just as intense. Each time it came suddenly and I was unprepared. If I were to give a word that would fit each situation, it would be "helpless."

Most people don't realize it until it is too late, but God's wrath is coming, and it will come upon us very suddenly. At that moment we will be totally helpless. We will be totally helpless, that is unless we have faith in Jesus, the One Who rescues us from the coming wrath. Being connected to Jesus by faith means that we will be saved. Now that's a comforting thought. Amen.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for rescuing us from our heavenly Father's wrath. We certainly deserve His wrath because of our sin. But You have rescued us and we thank and praise You for it, amen.
