Thursday after Trinity 11, 8/19/1999

Acts 13: 38--41 Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through Him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: "Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you." --NIV

In the name of Jesus, amen.

Many people today think that life will go on and on. They believe only what they see, or only what they dream op in their own minds. Some will take Christ only on their terms. They see Him as an example for social change, a great moral leader or a model of compassion and acceptance. While all of these things are true of Christ in one way or another, they miss the central reason Jesus walked among us. Other scoff at Christ at any level.

Those who miss that central reason, as well as those who scoff, will perish in the day when the Lord does the unbelievable. The judgment be far from anything they could imagine. It will be a shock, and a great terror for them. Only those who believe in Jesus will escape that terror.

And those who believe will indeed escape it because they are justified in Christ Jesus. For those who believe there is true peace both now, and in eternity. True peace comes from being at peace with God. When we are at peace with God, it does not matter what happens around us; if we are at peace with God, we have peace that will carry us through the roughest times. Thanks and praise to our Savior Who Justifies us. Amen.

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for justifying those who believe in You. Keep us from being among the scoffers who will perish. Grant us Your Holy Spirit, so that we remain faithful to you always, amen.
