Romans 9: 5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen. --NIV
In the name of the One Who is over all, amen.
There is a delicate balance which must be maintained in our understanding, and that is that Jesus Christ is both God and man. It is a fine line we must walk, and Satan has worked to destroy the Church by attacking both sides of the line. For that reason we focus this week on the deity of Christ.
It goes against our reason to believe that Jesus could have been anything other than a man. He walked with us. He cried with us. He gave us His sympathy, and finally, He died. These are all human qualities. Beyond this, didn't He even call Himself "The Son of Man?" Our sinful mind struggles to understand. But all we need to do is take God at His word and trust that what He tells us is true. And God's word tells us that on the one hand Jesus is truly a human being, on the other, He is almighty God.
Saint Paul reminds us of this fact when He looks at the benefit of being a Jew: "From them is traced the human ancestry of Christ." If Paul found it necessary to emphasize that Jesus has a human ancestry, then it goes without saying that He has a divine ancestry. Just in case we miss the point, Paul goes on to say that Christ is God over all.
It is to our benefit that Jesus is God over all, because that means He is God over our understanding as well. If we pray to Him and ask Him, He will guide our understanding so that we are able to trust what the Lord tells us in His holy word. Amen.
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, it is not easy for us to accept the truth that you are truly God and truly man. Give us the gift of Your Holy Spirit, and help us to accept the truth, amen.
