Matthew 3: 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance. --NKJV

In the name of the One Who cautions us to live a life of repentance, amen.

Well, it is Christmas eve. Are you ready? Are all the preparations done? The day is here and it will soon be too late for any preparations. That's the way it is in our spiritual lives too. The day for repentance is here. If we don't do it now, it will be too late. So, have you produced fruit in keeping with repentance?

If you have stolen money, give it back. If you owe an apology, apologize. If you are guilty of being selfish, share your wealth with the poor. If you cursed, bless. If you broke the speed limit, obey it. Above all, if you have put other things in place of God, worship and praise your God and Savior!

Now, all this might sound like penance, and that is exactly what it is. But don't confuse it with false teachings on penance that you find in the Roman Church. Biblical penance does not contribute to our being forgiven, but if we are truly repentant, we will show it in our works. This is a Biblical concept that is almost lost to Lutherans in our day, and we suffer for it. When we allow ourselves to continue on without showing fruits of repentance, we make a mockery out of the Gospel! It is no wonder that people are not drawn to our churches. It is no wonder that we are not more blessed by God.

Brothers and sisters, Christ has freed us from sin and every evil. He has given us peace with the Father as a free gift. May that peace and freedom move you to live your life in repentance every day--bringing forth many fruits of repentance. Amen.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, we are guilty of mocking Your Gospel by not producing the fruits of repentance. Forgive us for this sin, and help us to live a life of grateful repentance that reflects the forgiveness you won for us. Give us Your Holy Spirit so that others may see our good works and glorify our heavenly Father, amen.
