1 John 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. --NKJV In the name of the God-Man, Who has destroyed the works of the devil, amen.
The Apostle John says “the Son of God was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Here John expresses the biblical truth that the Person of the Son of God, Who is both God and Man, has defeated the devil, thereby gaining for us salvation. After taking on human flesh in the Virgin Mary’s womb the divine nature and the human nature in Christ do exist as separate and distinct natures. However, the two natures are in such close and inseparable communion with each other that we can say that all actions which were performed, and are still performed for our salvation, are performed by the whole Person of the Son of God.
This is very important for us to believe dear friends, for it gets to the heart of the gospel. The Man Jesus is really God because of His communion with the divine nature. So when the bible says that the man Jesus died for us it is really saying that God died for us, even though it was the humanity of the Son of God that died and not the divinity (a spirit cannot die). This is important because if God did not die, but only a man, then we are lost eternally. This is because the death of another mere man could never atone for our sins, let alone the sins of every person who has ever lived and ever will live. But the fact that Jesus lived as a human and died a human means that He was, in fact, sacrificed. And the fact that He died as God means that His sacrifice is good for all people, including us. Amen.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you that You that You have taken on human flesh so that You could live the life we could not live, and finally die the death we would have to die otherwise. We confess that your life and death atoned for the sins of all people of all time, including us. For this we are eternally thankful. Amen.
