Matthew 3: 16, 17
And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens saying, "This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased." --NASB
In the name of the One in Whom the Father is well-pleased, amen.
The idea that the Father is well-pleased in the Son is the conection between the baptism of our Savior, and our own baptisms. In our natural state, the Father is not well-pleased with us. We have not placed Him above all other things. Whe have not kept His name holy. We have not studied His holy word as we should have. We have not honored our fathers and mothers or preserved and protected life. We have lied, committed adultery, stolen and coveted. In other words, we don't even come close to pleasing the Father.
But in this passage we read that the Father is well-pleased with our Savior, Jesus. Therefore we who have been baptized in Christ, have been clothed in Christ. Now when the Father looks down from heaven, he doesn't see a buch of sinful creatures. Rather, he see the holiness of His beloved Son covering us. We appear to the father as His dear, holy children.
More than that, just as Jesus received the Holy Spirit at His baptism, we too receive Him at ours. The Holy Spirit comes to us in our baptisms and creates faith in our hearts. He creates faith to trust that Jesus' sacrifice paid for our sins. May the mystery of the holy Triune God be at work in you always. Amen.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son who paid for our sins. Thank You for the Gift of Baptism which makes us Your dear children. Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit Who makes us holy. By these things keep us in the true faith to the glory of Your holy name, amen.
