1 Kings 21:2-4 And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for my house, and I will give you a better vineyard than it in its place; if you like, I will give you the price of it in money." But Naboth said to Ahab, "The Lord forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." So Ahab came into his house sullen and vexed because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed and turned away his face and ate no food. --NASB In the name of the One Who protects our property, amen.
Yesterday we were warned not to chase after money, but to be content with food and clothing. Today we see an example of breaking the ninth commandment. Ahab wanted something that simply didn't belong to him. It was something that he should not have wanted. Obviously, it caused him great grief. He was the king of Israel. He could have had many vineyards, but he wanted the one that he could not have. This is very typical of human nature, and it brings us nothing but heart ache. May God preserve us from such evil desire, and from those who have such evil desire. Amen.
Prayer: Dear Lord, our eyes often lead us to want things that are not ours. Remind us that while it is OK to want something like what someone else has, it is sinful to want what they have. By Your Holy Spirit, bless us with contentment in all things, amen.
