John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. --NASB In the name of the One from Whom came blood and water, amen.
The hymn, translated literally, says, “Oh darkest dread, God Himself is dead.” That was the reality of Good Friday. The very thought of it brings mixed feelings. There is horror over sin, which required such a great sacrifice. There is the sickening realization that human beings are so evil that they would attack and kill their own Savior. But there is great joy in seeing that from the dead body of Christ came the water of life.
Truly, out of death came life because the very water of Baptism poured from our Savior’s side. Truly, God has conquered death by death and given us life from His own body. Amen.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, You gave Your life for sinful man. Your sacrifice was so great that even the sun hid its face from the sight. But we look upon the water that poured from Your side and rejoice in the eternal life it brings. Graciously keep us in the Truth Faith that we might thank and glorify You forever, amen.
